An anchorite, suspected of sorcery, in the forest of Averoigne, who keeps a pack of savage dogs, of which he is inordinately fond. Several of these dogs are killed by the local peasantry and nobility; and, in revenge, the anchorite turns himself into a werewolf and attacks the slayers of his dogs. The anchorite-werewolf, cornered one night by a well-organized hunting-party, is driven back toward his hut, and is there slain by his own dogs, who recognize him only as a wolf.
