Act I, Scene I
A grassy meadow, by a lily-laden stream, within sight of Alnephrom, the capitol of Poseidions. Aviol, a girl of twelve, and the boy Cartha, a year or two older, approach from opposite sides of the meadow, and meet at the water's edge. Aviol sings.

Past theflown horizon's wall,
And the flight of any wind,
Where the sunken sunsets fall,
Lies the land that love would find-
Past the flown horizon's wall.
Past the fens of Oon and Orm,
Far within the mystic west,
Where the golden dragons swarm,
And the sable wyverns nest-

Past the mountain Ulmalor,
Builded on the world's extreme,
Whence the moon, in magic war,
Smites the world to mist and dream-
Past the mountain Ulmalor.
