The Wine of Lovers

Clark Ashton Smith

(Translated "from the French of Charles Pierre Baudelaire")

Space dawns today resplendently!
With rein nor spur, nor bridle, we
Will part upon the soaring wine
For faery skies and skies divine.

Like tortured angels, who endure
Some unrelenting calenture,
By flaming far mirages drawn
Through azure crystal of the dawn,

And softly, gently balancing
On whirlwinds of the conscious air
With indolent, delirious wing,

My sister, side by side we fare,
In truceless flight for ever blown,
To find the heaven my dreams have known.
