The Spectre

Phillip A. Ellis

Upon the desert's burning sand,
I saw a spectre drawing nigh
as vultures circled round on high,
above the dark and dying land.
Zothique's sunset filled all the sky
with sanguine rays that flowed and flared,
in clots and pools where I did stand.
Its shadow, on the ground, did lie
when it drew nigh and fiercely glared;
I stood upon the sand and stared
while trying hard to understand,
how eyes could glare when none where there.
While trying hard to understand,
I stood upon the sand and stared
when it drew nigh and fiercely glared;
its shadow, on the ground, did lie
in clots and pools where I did stand.
With sanguine rays that flowed and flared,
Zothique's sunset filled all the sky
above the dark and dying land.
As vultures circled round on high,
I saw a spectre drawing nigh
upon the desert's burning sand.
