Song of the Stars

Phillip A. Ellis

Ageless we are, ageless yet mortal fall,
   stretching beyond all sight,
unto our retinue daylight will call,
   unto your planets, night.

No peace nor shelter shall we offer up,
look on us all and weep,
we bear unto no soul a loving cup,
   we'll shine after you sleep.

You seek our mysteries, and all in vain,
   enigmatic we lie,
long after your deaths peaceful, or in pain,
   we'll shine until all dies.

We are the stars both beautiful and dun,
our worlds are ours to break
alike those baubles clustered round your sun,
that death, some day, shall take.
