Opus 1646

Phillip A. Ellis

Forever is enough for sleep; shall we sleep then for forever?

Let us this day be as thankful for beauty
ever we may, and I pray that we be true
ever to dreams that we cherish, that we view
sacred and higher than everyday duty.

Forever is enough for sleep; shall we sleep then for forever?

Let us this day be as thankful for water
quenching our thirst, and delighting us each day
trickle and rill do the fountains that all play
music that eases our everyday torture.

Forever is enough for sleep; shall we sleep then for forever?

Let us be thankful this day that we're living
still on a beautiful world that is unique,
still in the cities and countries of Zothique
facing eternity's night unforgiving.

Forever is enough for sleep; shall we sleep then for forever?

Though it is soon we must sleep for forever,
though to the darkness we ever must be left,
joyous our days of delight, though those bereft
fearing eternity’s sleep must be clever.

Forever is enough for sleep; shall we sleep then for forever?

Fearing eternity's sleep, they are dreaming
mysteries mundane to soften their conscience
driven to fearing and fretting, with nonsense
marked by their foolish, impractical scheming.

Forever is enough for sleep; shall we sleep then for forever?

Let us then laugh while the sun does but glimmer
rubied and sere in the sky as a cantrip
ancient, mysterious, destined to soon slip
into senescence, decaying and dimmer.

Forever is enough for sleep; shall we sleep then for forever?

Soon will the sun be an ember that's failing,
soon will the cold everlasting be as ice
coursing like glaciers that virtue and that vice
falter before like all maidens bewailing.

Forever is enough for sleep; shall we sleep then for forever?

Nothing will hinder the ice that will take us,
   nothing will halt its advance till we are naught;
nothing dissuades its advance, though we're distraught,
nothing will soften the blow that will break us.

Forever is enough for sleep; shall we sleep then for forever?

Just as the sun has its setting, then darkness
rules for a season, then dawn, which we adore,
aeons uncounted away, then we once more
live once again and will conquer the starkness.

Forever is enough for sleep; shall we sleep then for forever?

Beauty will rise and defy, and will linger:
once more we live in the day, and all our songs,
all of our rights, of our games and all our wrongs
live once again as does song and the singer.

Forever is enough for sleep; shall we sleep then for forever?
